COB vs SMD

The two constructions look similar on a reel and behave completely differently once installed. The choice is usually decided by whether the strip will be seen.

COB

What is the difference between COB and SMD LED strip?

COB strip carries hundreds of micro-LEDs under a continuous phosphor layer, so it emits an unbroken line of light with no visible dots even when viewed directly or in a shallow channel. SMD strip uses discrete LED packages, which leaves a dotted appearance unless it sits behind a frosted diffuser at sufficient depth. Choose COB for exposed coves, shadow gaps, and handrails; choose SMD for RGB, RGBW, addressable effects, and very high R9 output.
