Color Consistency: Binning & SDCM

Two reels of the same product can be visibly different colours. SDCM is the number that tells you how different they are allowed to be.

Two reels can both be labeled 3000K and still read as different whites. In a continuous cove, along millwork, or anywhere two reels join in one line, the eye catches the mismatch at the seam — and in a premium interior that seam is the first thing the client sees.

LED chips vary slightly out of production, so manufacturers sort them into color bins. How tightly a product holds its target is stated as SDCM (Standard Deviation Colour Matching), measured in MacAdam ellipse steps — the lower the number, the tighter the match. SDCM ≤ 3 is the professional architectural standard: differences are generally indistinguishable in normal use. Hold that line especially for long continuous runs, cabinetry and millwork, ceiling coves and architectural details, retail and exhibition spaces, and any multi-reel installation.

Single-bin shipment — every reel in your order pulled from one color bin — removes visible tint variation where reels join. It applies within one production batch, so confirm color match across future orders at order time. For the strictest projects — high-end residential, galleries, premium retail, hospitality — 2-step SDCM is available on select products.

Lower is tighter. Spec ≤ 3 for architectural work; 2-step for critical color environments.

What does SDCM mean and why does it matter?

SDCM measures how far a batch of LEDs can deviate in color from the nominal target, expressed in MacAdam ellipse steps. At 1 to 2 SDCM the difference is imperceptible; 3 SDCM is the architectural standard and indistinguishable in normal use; at 5 SDCM and above, a tint shift becomes obvious where two runs meet. Specify 3 SDCM or tighter whenever separate reels join in the same sightline.
