Safety & Certifications

Certification is what an inspector asks for and what an insurer relies on. It applies to the component connected to line voltage first.

Independent safety certification tells an inspector — and you — that a product has been tested to a recognized standard. The marks are not interchangeable; each certifies something different.

Mark	Certifies	What it means
UL Listed	Complete end product	Tested and certified as a finished product, safe to install as-is
UL Recognized	Component	Certified for use inside a larger certified system, possibly under restricted conditions
ETL Listed	Complete end product	End-product certification by Intertek, tested to the same applicable UL/ANSI standards

Rule of thumb: Listed (UL or ETL) = a finished product certified for installation; Recognized = a component certified for use inside a certified system. For an LED system, check the certification on the specific strip, driver, controller, or assembly — one certified component does not make the whole system certified.

What certifications should LED strip and drivers carry in the United States?

Look for UL or ETL listing on the driver, since that is the component connected to line voltage and the one inspectors check. The strip and system should meet the relevant UL 2108 low-voltage lighting requirements, and outdoor installations require components listed as suitable for wet or damp locations. FCC compliance covers the electromagnetic emissions of drivers and controllers.
